Until visiting Hacienda La Joya, we’d been to taco places that had great carnitas tacos, and others that had great carne asada tacos, and still others that specialized in some other kind of tacos. But those specialty items were more often than not, one hit wonders. Typically, anything else on the menu paled in comparison to that one great item that made our mouths water and our bellies happy.
We first spotted La Vida Cantina on one of our frequent trips to the Starlight Cinemas at Triangle Square in Costa Mesa. We head to Starlight frequently for movies on the weekends because they are never crowded and there’s usually a great deal on Groupon so we can see the latest movies for bargain prices.
Flour or corn tortillas? This is the choice facing most taco lovers as they place their orders at the counter or with their waiter. For me it’s pretty simple, I like carnitas and al pastor on a corn tortilla, but prefer flour tortillas for chicken or asada. Anything else, and it’s a simple coin flip to decide. With a name like Mission Viejo, you’d think good tasting Mexican food in a full service restaurant would be easy to find.
